People clinking glasses at sidewalk beer stalls across Ho Chi Minh City are not unfamiliar with street performers who sing or imitate Michael Jackson’s dance steps, and fire dance has been added to the entertainment list, giving more heat – literally – to their drinking tables.
Street performers besiege diners and try to capture their attention with as many original performances as possible, with the ultimate goal of selling candy or lottery tickets.
Many transgender people have come up with the fire dance steps as diners seem already fed up with street singers and copycat Michael Jacksons.
Donning skimpy clothes, the fire ‘artists’ dance, shake, and swing their bodies crazily while manipulating the torches in their hands. Some even treat viewers with such dangerous stunts as fire breathing and eating.
As they may be ignored by the diners who are busy toasting fun with their beer mugs, some performers even pour gasoline onto the street and set it on fire, which scares away motorbike drivers who unfortunately have to pass by such ‘fire circles.’
Those fire dancers can now be spotted along the streets that are packed with sidewalk beer shops along the Nhieu Loc canal, or in Tan Binh District and District 10.
The street fire dance receives mixed responses from the viewers. Some are willing to buy candy from the performers, while others raise their eyebrows at the dangerous performance.
To see (until the end) is to believe:
