In Vietnam, transport company, driver fined $4,400 for wrong-way driving

Traffic police officers have slapped a total fine of VND112 million (US$4,400) on a driver and the owner of a sleeper bus after the driver was caught driving the wrong direction on Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway in northern Vietnam without a license.

A video surfaced on social media last Saturday, showing a 29-seater sleeper bus traveling in the wrong direction on Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway.

Following an investigation, traffic police managed to identify the vehicle.

At around 6:20 pm on Sunday, officers stopped the bus at a toll gate on the expressway and questioned the driver.

The driver, identified as L.V.N., a 36-year-old resident of Ha Tinh Province in north-central Vietnam, admitted to driving the bus with 25 passengers on board in the wrong direction on the expressway early on Saturday morning.

“I couldn't see the wrong-way sign clearly because it was dark, so I ended up driving in the wrong direction,” he claimed.

N. also failed to show a valid driver's license, getting two fines of VND35 million ($1,370) for driving the vehicle in the wrong direction on the expressway and VND19 million ($743) for driving without a license.

Meanwhile, the owner of the vehicle, a transport business, faced a fine of VND58 million ($2,287) under Government Decree 168, which came into effect on January 1 this year.
