India opens doors to fresh Vietnamese durians in major trade win

India has officially approved the import of fresh Vietnamese durians, opening a gateway to a market of over 1.4 billion people and providing a major boost to Vietnam’s export diversification efforts, agricultural authorities announced Thursday.

According to a notification from the Indian Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam has been officially added to India’s list of eligible fresh durian exporters under newly enacted import regulations that took effect on July 13.

Notably, Indian authorities will not require special import conditions or additional phytosanitary declarations beyond standard certification.

Vietnam's Plant Protection Department credited the milestone to sustained technical negotiations between both nations, highlighting growing bilateral trade ties.

While the vast market offers immense potential—driven by India's expanding middle class and rising appetite for imported produce—initial demand is expected to center on major urban hubs, high-end retail chains, hospitality sectors, and e-commerce platforms.

Officials are urging Vietnamese exporters to conduct thorough market research regarding consumer tastes, logistics, and distribution networks.

The department noted it will work closely with Indian agencies to ensure smooth trade operations and address potential logistical hurdles.

The green light comes at a prime moment for Vietnam, which boasts roughly 190,000 hectares of durian cultivation and anticipates a harvest exceeding two million metric tons this year.

Customs data shows Vietnam exported $562 million worth of durians in the first five months of the year alone—a 45.2% year-on-year surge.

With the main harvest running through November across the southeastern region and Central Highlands, industry analysts project total durian export revenues could top $4 billion this year if shipments remain steady.
