The agency will introduce an AI-powered speech recognition system that automatically transcribes emergency calls, aiming to streamline the process of recording call details and ease the burden on staff amid a growing number of ambulance dispatches.
Related expenses will be included in the agency's fiscal 2027 budget request.
The project will utilize so-called "vertical AI," which specializes in specific fields. The AI system will also be equipped with a function that advises staff on necessary actions according to the content of each call.
AI will also be introduced for the "#7119" telephone consultation service, which advises people on whether they should call an ambulance. The system will automatically provide information such as guidance on nearby hospitals for callers.
In addition, the agency plans to introduce wearable robots to assist rescue operations at disaster or accident sites, reducing the physical burden on firefighters when carrying victims. Fire departments will also test AI technology that detects fires by analyzing aerial images captured by drones.
In July, the government released an interim report on its strategy for the development and practical application of vertical AI, outlining a policy to promote its implementation in the firefighting field by 2030.
