Storm Kajiki, the fifth storm to hit the East Vietnam Sea this year, weakened into a tropical depression after making landfall in the Nghe An–Ha Tinh area on Monday afternoon, unleashing torrential rains across northern and north-central Vietnam.

The storm struck around 3:00 pm, bringing heavy downpours from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri and across the northern delta, with some areas recording more than 600 millimeters of rainfall, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

By late evening, it had further weakened as it moved west-northwest toward the Vietnam–Laos border, with winds reaching up to 88 kilometers per hour

At 4:00 am Tuesday, the system was centered over central Laos and was forecast to weaken further into a low-pressure area before dissipating.

Early Tuesday, strong winds of 61 kph, with gusts up to 88 kph, were still reported in Thanh Hoa–Nghe An and along the Ninh Binh coast.

In the Gulf of Tonkin, including Bach Long Vi, Cat Hai, Co To, Van Don, and Hon Ngu Islands, winds remained at similar strength, generating rough seas with waves of two to five meters.

During Tuesday, heavy rainfall of 50–100mm is expected across the midland and lowland areas of northern Vietnam, as well as from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh, with localized totals exceeding 200mm.

Authorities have issued warnings for prolonged torrential rain, with some areas potentially receiving more than 100mm within three hours.

As of 7:00 pm on Monday, Kajiki had left one person dead in Ha Tinh and eight others injured across Ha Tinh and Quang Tri, according to the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

In Ha Tinh alone, 621 houses lost their roofs and 144 were flooded.

Flooding also damaged 16,346 hectares of rice, 611 hectares of vegetables, and 2,058 hectares of fruit trees, while 4,443 trees were uprooted.

The province additionally reported 22 downed power poles and outages in 60 of its 69 communes.
