Large drains become trash traps during rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City

On several major streets in District 1 and District 3, drain covers with wide metal grates—or in some cases, no covers at all—are allowing garbage to slip easily into the drainage system.

Locals say the poor design turns these drains into 'trash vacuums' that not only mar the city's image but also increase the risk of flooding.

"Plastic containers, takeout boxes, and even phone packaging fall straight through," said one resident. 

"Drains like this clog up fast."

On Thursday, streets like Nguyen Huu Cau in District 1 were visibly littered with plastic bags, food wrappers, cigarette packs, and milk cartons stuck inside open drains. 

On Tran Quang Khai Street, also in District 1, some covers were broken, with entire bars missing. 

The situation on Hai Ba Trung Street in District 3 was even more severe, with several manholes left completely uncovered, posing both a safety threat and a major entry point for street trash into the sewer network.

Rainfall only worsens the problem. 

As water levels rise, the accumulated garbage is often forced back up to the surface, bringing foul smells and scattered waste to sidewalks and roads. 

The issue is especially disruptive around hospitals, restaurants, and busy commercial areas.

"Plastic bags and garbage line the street," said M.H., a resident in the area. 

"People out for morning exercise have to hold their noses."

M.H. added that neighbors had reported the issue to local officials, who explained the large openings were intended to allow faster drainage. 

Although inspectors visited the area, no changes were made afterward, he said.

Frustrated residents are now calling on the city to implement more effective and balanced solutions that can maintain drainage capacity while improving safety and cleanliness.
