The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon during the traditional festival in Thai Lai Hamlet, Kim Anh Commune, according to a leader of the Kim Anh People's Committee who spoke to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
Traditional wrestling was among several activities held as part of the festival.
"During the wrestling competition, an unexpected accident occurred that left one person injured," the official said.
A video of the incident posted on social media showed two wrestlers competing.
One wrestler wearing a yellow loincloth lifted his opponent, who was wearing a red loincloth.
The wrestler in red appeared to land head-first on the ground and lay motionless.
The man was taken to hospital for emergency treatment.
However, due to his poor prognosis, he was taken home on Friday morning and died shortly afterwards.
Local authorities and mass organizations visited and offered condolences to the victim's family.
Initial assessments indicate the incident was an unintended accident, the official said, adding that festival organizers had ensured the event was conducted safely and in accordance with regulations.
Traditional wrestling is a common feature of village festivals in Vietnam, particularly during annual celebrations held in the early part of the lunar new year.
