Omar Borkan Al Gala, who dismayed local audiences with his show in Ho Chi Minh City in the middle of this month, continues to raise eyebrows, after the show’s organizer recently revealed that he requested more than US$5,000 for his appearance on stage under the rain that night.
Om September 13, the event tiled “Ket Noi Uoc Mo” (Linking dreams) took place at the Military Zone 7 Stadium with the participation of around 3,000 audience members who waited two hours under the rain to see Omar.
Although the starting time printed on the tickets was 7pm, the show officially kicked off more than an hour later with performances by local singers Van Mai Huong and Noo Phuoc Thinh and a long-winded, characterless fashion performance. Omar then appeared on stage at 9:05pm, showcased an ao dai on his hands, smiled at fans, delivered some greetings, walked a few steps to the end of the catwalk, and left. Omar’s entire “performance” lasted around 10 minutes.
The short performance was a disappointment to many people because the show’s organizer had advertised that Omar would interact with fans and strut with 40 local fans chosen after a casting event held before the show.
In explanation, The Gioi Gia Dinh magazine, the event’s organizer, sent an announcement to local press, saying the delay as well as Omar’s cursory performance was because of his sudden requirements.
Specifically, that night, Omar only agreed to appear on the stage during unpredicted rain if the organizer paid him more than USD6,000. According to the organizer, it took a lot of time for them to negotiate with him and get the price down to nearly USD5,000, as well as to mobilize the money right away.
Moreover, Omar didn’t wear an ao dai on stage because he also demanded to be paid more for wearing it, but the organizer refused and cancelled his catwalk performance.
Ho Thu, representative of The gioi Gia Dinh, told Tuoi Tre that although Omar’s requirements were unreasonable, they had to give in due to the contract’s negligence.
Earlier, before the show, Omar had caused a stir among local netizens upon his arrival in HCMC. Many people wondered why he was invited for a show when none of his talent for entertainment had been confirmed. Moreover, right after he arrived in the city, the news that he had not been expelled from Saudi Arabia for “being too handsome” was spread and shocked a number of people. At a later meeting with local media, the 25-year-old Arab man also admitted that the deportation story was not true and was just a misunderstanding, but he couldn’t stop the false rumor from going viral.
