The training, titled 'Improving the Effectiveness of English Teaching and Learning through Linearthinking,' brought together teachers from Go Vap, Hanh Thong, An Nhon, An Hoi Dong, An Hoi Tay, and Thong Tay Hoi Wards.
Nguyen Huu Tai, vice-chairman of the Go Vap Ward People's Committee, said the event was part of a summer 2026 training program for education managers and teachers in the ward.
"One of the important tasks for wards in Ho Chi Minh City is implementing the city's plan to improve English teaching quality and make English a second language in schools during the 2025-30 period, with a vision to 2045," Tai said.
He added that the Ministry of Education and Training had also recently released a draft proposal for public comment on making English a compulsory subject from first grade.
"This requires wards to prepare early in terms of teaching staff, methods, and approaches," Tai said.
After learning about the Linearthinking method and its recognition by various education agencies, Go Vap authorities worked with DOL English to organize the training session.
Because of their confidence in the method, Go Vap officials also invited teachers from neighboring wards to join the event online.
Truong Thi Thao Ngan, an English teacher at Kim Dong Elementary School in Go Vap who has nearly 10 years of teaching experience, said the prospect of making English a second language in schools, as well as the proposal to make it compulsory from first grade, would create challenges for both teachers and students.
She said the training was therefore necessary for teachers to update their knowledge, teaching methods and skills, helping improve the quality of English teaching and learning and meet emerging needs.

PhD candidate Ha Dang Nhu Quynh speaks at a training session held at the Go Vap Ward People’s Committee headquarters on the morning of August 22, 2026.
At the training, Ha Dang Nhu Quynh, a PhD candidate with a 9.0 IELTS score and academic director of DOL English, introduced Linearthinking, which was developed by a team of former students of the High School for the Gifted under Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City.
According to Quynh, Linearthinking has been shown to improve learners' performance in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while helping them develop logical thinking, organize knowledge, and apply English more naturally.
"The method was designed by Vietnamese people specifically for Vietnamese learners, combining mathematical thinking, memory techniques, and research into the influence of the mother tongue on English," Quynh said.
By focusing on thinking and language structures, Linearthinking aims to make English learning more systematic while remaining accessible to both children and adults.
In April 2025, the Education Information and Program Center under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training worked with a partner to organize Linearthinking training for more than 800 English teachers from elementary and middle schools in the city.
