Just one week after its grand opening, the Nghe An Oncology Hospital in the namesake province in north-central Vietnam sustained significant damage from storm Kajiki.

Storm Kajiki, the fifth to enter the East Vietnam Sea this year, weakened into a tropical depression on Tuesday after making landfall in Nghe An and Ha Tinh Provinces on Monday.

On Wednesday, two days after the storm swept through Nghe An, staff of the Nghe An Oncology Hospital were still working urgently to repair the damage and ensure uninterrupted medical services for patients.

During the storm, strong gusts of wind tore off its roof sheets and ceiling panels, severely damaging various auxiliary structures of the hospital.

Entire corridor ceilings were blown away, the roof of the parking area collapsed, and numerous trees were uprooted, resulting in extensive property damage.

Doctor Pham Vinh Hung, deputy director of the Nghe An Oncology Hospital, reported that although the storm caused widespread destruction to roofs and ceilings, the safety of both patients and staff was ensured. Medical treatment continued without disruption.

"Technical teams, logistics units, and healthcare staff worked through the night to quickly restore the hospital’s safety and cleanliness, creating a secure and reliable treatment environment for the community," Hung said.

Phase 2 of the hospital project involved an investment of VND1.259 trillion (US$47.7 million), covering a construction area of 72,000 square meters.

The facility includes an eight-story administrative and technical building, 41 departments, centers, and offices, staffed by over 1,300 personnel and accommodating 1,250 beds.

It is designed to handle an average of 1,000 outpatient visits per day, provide inpatient care for about 1,500 patients, and serve upwards of 10,000 additional outpatients.
