Police verify report of Vietnamese student missing after crossing flooded road in Hanoi

At around 10:00 am on Thursday, residents discovered an old blue-and-black Honda Wave motorbike abandoned near a drainage opening at the end of Pho Vien Street, close to the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology.

The surrounding area was submerged, with no people in sight.

Authorities later confirmed the bike belonged to N.D.S., a man from Ninh Binh Province, northern Vietnam who died in 2024.

His son, born in 2008 and currently a student at the university, had been using the vehicle for commuting.

By the early hours of Friday, two professional divers equipped with oxygen tanks searched the drainage system but found no trace of the missing student.

Police, soldiers, and local militia continued the search through the night.

Family members rushed to Hanoi from their hometown on Thursday afternoon after hearing the news.

The student’s uncle, Bo, said the family was devastated.

“He had just returned to our hometown last Sunday, and now that he had just come back to Hanoi, we heard this news,” the uncle said.

“They still haven’t found him and we can’t reach him by phone.

“His father passed away three years ago, and now only his mother remains.”

A Dong Ngac Ward official told Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper that the case is still under verification, with no final conclusion yet. For now, the only evidence at the scene is the abandoned motorbike near the drainage area.
