Vietnamese social media has been abuzz with heated debate over restaurants that refuse pets. While some argue that dining out with pets is normal, others believe that banning animals from eateries is justified.

Pet ownership is common in major cities, but while some people are comfortable around animals, others may have allergies or sensitivities.

The controversy was ignited by a post in a group with nearly 900,000 members, discussing a restaurant on Dang Van Ngu Street, Phu Nhuan Ward, Ho Chi Minh City prohibiting dogs and cats inside.

Some users commented that banning pets with signs at the entrance was excessive and made the dining experience less enjoyable.

Pet owners claimed the policy was unfair to their pets, whom they see as companions.

“Pet owners are aware that not everyone likes animals, so most won’t bring them. But where they take their pets should be their right,” a netizen commented.

In contrast, another anonymous member, a former restaurant owner of five years, argued that the discomfort comes from irresponsible pet owners who allow pets to sit at the table, even using bowls, chopsticks, and spoons to feed them.

“In some restaurants, pets seem to be treated better than the owners or other diners,” the user remarked.

Some restaurant owners have faced an overt backlash from customers when reminding them not to bring pets inside.

“My family runs a restaurant. A woman brought her dog in and my parents said nothing. But she used our bowl to pour milk coffee for the dog to lick," shared Minh Duy. “My father reminded her and she angrily paid and left."

“I run a restaurant. When reminded, customers glare at us. Who can tolerate such unpleasant scenes?” added user Trang Anh Quan.

In the comments, most users expressed support and sympathy for restaurants that clearly refuse service to customers bringing pets.

Huynh Phuong commented, “You love your pet and eat from the same bowl with it—no one stops you. But don’t force others to do the same.”

At the restaurant in question, T., the restaurant’s owner, explained that while he also loves animals, running a food business means prioritizing hygiene and customer comfort.

“My restaurant serves food directly, so cleanliness is a top concern. Even well-groomed pets can shed hair, smell, or roam around the dining area," T. explained.

“Some of our customers are allergic, and even a small amount of pet hair in the air can make them uncomfortable."

He emphasized that the 'No pets allowed' sign is not about disliking animals, but about ensuring food safety, avoiding penalties from authorities, and maintaining a clean, comfortable dining environment for everyone.

“This rule helps me protect customers, uphold the restaurant’s reputation, and ensure stable long-term operations,” he added.

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, from Tang Nhon Phu Ward in Ho Chi Minh City, always contacts restaurants beforehand when she wants to bring her five-year-old tiny poodle.

“Wherever I go, I ask first if pets are allowed, and I assure them my dog doesn’t shed. If permitted, I bring a separate dining set and chair so we don’t disturb others,” said Ngan.

Despite this, she still worries about being judged by other customers.

“Even with thorough preparation, I never feel completely comfortable bringing my pet inside. I hope restaurants will consider creating designated areas for animal lovers,” she shared.
