According to the Southern and Central Highlands Regional Hydro-Meteorological Center, rainfall totals included 91.2mm in Thu Duc, 44.6mm in Hoc Mon District, and 22.4mm in Cat Lai Port.
As of Thursday afternoon, thunderclouds were developing over Ho Chi Minh City, with localized showers reported.
Rainfall is expected to intensify toward the evening.
The rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City began later than in some other provinces, where showers started in late April.
Early-season rains typically develop quickly, with intense rainfall over narrow areas.
Officials have warned that the first weeks of May bring high temperatures and rising humidity as southwest monsoon winds begin pushing moisture inland.
Thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and even hail are possible during these initial downpours, the weather center said.
Widespread rain events are forecast later in May, with the potential for localized flooding in urban areas.
Authorities also cautioned about low-pressure systems over the sea that could bring rough waves, strong winds, and hazardous conditions for marine activities.
