The Cu Chi Commune forest protection unit confirmed on Wednesday it recently received a yellow-cheeked gibbon, scientifically known as Nomascus gabriellae, weighing approximately three kilograms, from a local resident in Cu Chi.

It also took in a long-tailed macaque, whose scientific name is Macaca fascicularis, weighing about six kilograms and a pig-tailed macaque, scientifically known as Macaca leonina, weighing some four kilograms from a resident in Tan An Hoi Commune.

According to the residents, these three animals had been kept as gifts since they were young.

All are listed as endangered under Vietnam’s regulations on rare and precious wildlife.

The yellow-cheeked gibbon belongs to Group IB, the most strictly protected category, while the two macaques belong to Group IIB.

The animals will be checked and cared for to ensure they are healthy before being released back into their natural habitat, in line with Vietnam’s forestry and wildlife regulations.
