Police in Vung Tau Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s southern hub, have detained a restaurant owner and his chef following a violent clash with a group of tourists that allegedly stemmed from a parking dispute.

Local police said on Friday evening that the investigative police agency under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Public Security had launched criminal proceedings against Dang Tran Quoc Vu, 49, and Dao Nang Nghia, 29, and ordered their temporary detention for allegedly disturbing public order.

Vu owns a restaurant at 98 Tran Phu Street in the ward, where Nghia works as a chef.

According to earlier reports, on the morning of February 21, a group of tourists from Dong Nai Province drove there to look for a coffee shop where they could have drinks and enjoy the sea view.

They parked along the roadside beside an empty lot opposite Vu’s restaurant, but he objected to their vehicle being left there, triggering a heated argument that escalated into a physical fight.

During the clash, several individuals allegedly used objects as weapons, including a shovel, while pushing and striking one another, disrupting public order in the residential area.

After receiving reports from residents, ward police officers quickly arrived at the scene to restore order.

Investigators later summoned Vu, Nghia and D.T.B.N., 26, Vu’s son, for questioning before deciding to prosecute and detain Vu and Nghia.

Municipal police said they are continuing to gather evidence and clarify the roles of those involved to ensure strict handling of the case under the law.

They stressed that firm action will be taken against any acts showing disregard for the law or attempts to resolve disputes through violence.

Authorities also advised residents that disputes arising in daily life, business, traffic or civil matters should be settled calmly and legally.

Using weapons, engaging in group fights or causing disorder in public places not only harms others’ health and property but may also lead to serious criminal liability, with long-term consequences for those involved and their families.

The police urged the public to promptly report any acts of disorder or violence to the nearest police station for appropriate handling.
