Traders in Da Nang City, central Vietnam are facing fresh flooding on Monday, just a week after historic rains submerged warehouses and ruined hundreds of tonnes of rice, local authorities and traders said.

In Da Nang’s An Thang Ward, families are still assessing losses from last week’s floods.

Nguyen Thi Kim, 48, said her family’s 300 bags of paddy rice and 20 bags of milled rice were submerged despite efforts to elevate them.

“The water rose too fast. Even if we had tried to move it, I wouldn’t have known where to keep tens of tonnes of rice,” she said.

Pham Thi Van, 58, reported nearly 100 bags of her rice were also ruined.

Traders said they plan to dry the rice for livestock feed, but local drying facilities are overwhelmed.

Persistent rain and overcast skies are preventing natural drying, and some rice is sprouting or fermenting.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said from Sunday night to Monday morning, moderate to heavy rain fell across Ha Tinh Province to Da Nang, with heavy rainfall reported in Hue and Da Nang.

Rivers including the Huong, Bo, and Vu Gia-Thu Bon are rising rapidly.

Floods have returned to several highland communes and central areas of Da Nang, and mudflows have inundated homes in landslide-prone areas.
