The incident occurred at around 9:00 pm at kilometer marker 620 on the expressway section passing through Bo Trach Commune.
According to local authorities, the rocks, each larger than an adult’s fist, slammed into the front windshields of the moving vehicles, causing varying degrees of damage.
Some windshields were punctured, while others were badly cracked.
One driver even found a large rock still inside the cabin after the impact.
The incident caused chaos on the expressway, with several tractor-trailers forced to stop abruptly to inspect the damage.
Drivers said they did not know where the rocks had come from, describing the situation as extremely dangerous because the vehicles were traveling at high speed when the rocks suddenly struck their windshields.
Local residents said there is no stone quarry or overpass near the site.
They also said there were no rock-carrying vehicles traveling ahead at the time.
On Sunday morning, Do Manh Tai, chairman of the commune administration, said he had instructed local police to verify the incident and report their findings.
After livestreams of the incident circulated on social media, thousands of comments expressed concern about safety on the expressway.
Many called on police to urgently investigate the incident and identify those responsible.
