A Russian tourist drowned while swimming at Mui Ne beach in Lam Dong Province, Vietnam on Saturday.

According to initial reports, three tourists went swimming along the stretch of resorts in Mui Ne in the morning when they were suddenly swept away by waves and an undercurrent.

Rescue teams and jet ski service staff quickly spotted the incident and used rescue boards and jet skis to reach the scene.

Two Vietnamese tourists were brought safely back to shore while C.A., 60, a Russian national, was carried away by the current and submerged before the rescuers could reach him.

The victim was later pulled ashore, given first aid, and rushed to a hospital but he did not survive.

Local authorities have taken over the scene and worked with the rescue teams and witnesses.

They are also carrying out procedures to examine and preserve the victim’s body in coordination with the Russian diplomatic mission and his family for funeral arrangements.

According to the Mui Ne Ward People's Committee, the weather was sunny at the time of the accident and the waves were not unusually high.

However, the undercurrent in the area was very strong, possibly influenced by storm Koto, and could easily sweep swimmers out of the safe zone.

Rescue personnel and beach service operators said they continuously sounded whistles and used loudspeakers to warn swimmers who went too far, but some did not pay attention to the warnings.
