A section of Nguyen Cong Tru Street near the Han River in An Hai Ward, Da Nang City, central Vietnam collapsed suddenly on Wednesday afternoon, pulling two cars into a deep sinkhole.

The subsidence occurred at around 2:00 pm while it was raining heavily.

The subsiding area was located next to a major construction site filled with heavy equipment.

The collapsed section was several meters deep, with visible cracks spreading around it.

Local officials told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the two vehicles belonged to workers at the nearby project and had been parked along Nguyen Cong Tru Street when they plunged into the sinkhole.

Authorities quickly mobilized cranes to retrieve the damaged cars and temporarily cordoned off the area for safety.

Residents expressed growing concern as cracks were also spotted on nearby Ngo Quyen Street, a busy route frequently used by heavy trucks.

The Da Nang Department of Construction on Wednesday night issued a press statement about the sinkhole incident on Nguyen Cong Tru Street.

The collapse occurred at 2:10 pm, affecting a stretch of the downtown street, directly beside the Capital Square 3 urban development project.

The resulting cavity measured roughly 15 meters long and six meters wide.

The stormwater drainage pipe beneath the road ruptured, while the incident caused the two parked cars to fall in, according to the department.

No injuries were reported.

A preliminary assessment indicated that the Capital Square 3 project was in the process of constructing its underground section when a gap formed in the retaining wall bordering Nguyen Cong Tru Street.

Heavy rainfall then washed sand and soil from the exposed area into the construction pit, undermining the foundation and breaking the drainage pipe.

Water escaping from the pipe eroded the surrounding soil, ultimately triggering the road collapse and damaging nearby infrastructure.

Officials from the municipal People’s Committee and representatives from the municipal Department of Construction visited the site shortly after the incident, ordering the project’s developer to implement immediate remedial measures.

The developer has since fenced off dangerous areas and carried out temporary stabilization to ensure safety.

The developer of the Capital Square 3 project was identified as SIH Real Estate Co., Ltd., according to the department.

The firm is currently working on the project’s underground structure.
