Nguyen Van Nen, secretary of the municipal Party Committee, praised Shin’s efforts in enhancing Vietnam-South Korea relations, especially since the elevation of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in December 2022.

Nen highlighted the consul general’s pivotal role in organizing high-level visits, facilitating business connections, and strengthening economic ties.

South Korea currently ranks among the top investors in Ho Chi Minh City, with around 2,300 projects and total investment exceeding US$5.5 billion.

Beyond trade, Shin was also recognized for promoting people-to-people exchanges, Korean studies, and cultural cooperation, including support for the 80,000-strong South Korean community in Ho Chi Minh City.

He helped establish partnerships between universities and research institutions and expand community cultural programs.

The South Korean diplomat expressed his affection for Vietnam, recalling an emotional memory of being invited to a ceremony honoring late President Ho Chi Minh.

“It made me feel like part of the family,” he said.

Though his term is ending, Shin affirmed he would remain dedicated to strengthening bilateral ties.

A former professor, he revealed plans to resume teaching in South Korea but hopes to return to Vietnam as a visiting lecturer.

In response, Nen said he welcomed Shin back in any capacity and extended an invitation for him to attend the memorial for late President Ho Chi Minh in September.
