Sovico Group, a founding shareholder of air carrier Vietjet Air, has submitted a detailed proposal to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Architecture outlining the alignment and infrastructure plan for metro line No. 4, while seeking to conduct study on metro line No. 5.

According to the group, the 43-kilometer Dong Thanh - Hiep Phuoc metro line will pass through 22 wards and communes across Ho Chi Minh City.

The route will include 18.2 kilometers of underground tracks and 24.8 kilometers of elevated sections.

The line will feature 30 stations in total, including 13 underground stations and 17 elevated stations.

Two depots are proposed, located in Dong Thanh Commune and Hiep Phuoc Commune.

The proposed route would begin at the Dong Thanh depot and end at Hiep Phuoc Station.

The line is expected to follow several major transport corridors, including Ha Huy Giap, Nguyen Oanh, Truong Son, Nguyen Van Troi, Hai Ba Trung, Le Loi, Tran Hung Dao, De Tham, Khanh Hoi, and Nguyen Huu Tho Streets, as well as planned roads in the Dong Thanh and Hiep Phuoc areas.

Metro line No. 4 is designed for operating speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour on elevated sections and 90 kilometers per hour underground.

The project would use electrified rail technology aimed at ensuring modern, safe, and efficient operations.

The project will be implemented under a public-private partnership model using a build-transfer (BT) contract structure.

Payment would be made through a combination of land funds and urban development along the route in line with transit-oriented development (TOD) guidelines.

The line has been identified as a strategic transport axis linking downtown Ho Chi Minh City with emerging urban zones in northern Cu Chi and the southern Nha Be - Hiep Phuoc area, as well as surrounding areas.

The fourth metro line is viewed as one of Ho Chi Minh City’s most important cross-city metro corridors, expected to ease traffic congestion, strengthen transport connectivity, and support the expansion of the city’s urban footprint toward a multi-center development model.

The metro line is also expected to improve connectivity between the city center and key external transport hubs while accelerating development in newly planned growth areas.

In addition, Sovico Group has proposed conducting research on metro line No. 5, specifically the section connecting Da Phuoc and Long Truong.

Following its proposal made in April, the city approved in principle, allowing it to survey, study, and prepare an investment plan for the metro line No. 5 section.

The research will also include TOD plans along the route, with a formal proposal expected to be submitted in the second quarter of 2026.

The city’s first metro line, stretching 19.7 kilometers from Ben Thanh Station in downtown Ho Chi Minh City to Suoi Tien Coach Station in Thu Duc, officially began operations in December 2024, marking a historic milestone in the development of urban transport for the city after 12 years of construction.

Ho Chi Minh City aims to develop 10 metro routes spanning some 510 kilometers by 2045.
