StanChart Korea, Habitat for Humanity Vietnam to build houses for poor

The Standard Chartered Bank Korea, in coordination with Habitat for Humanity Vietnam and volunteers from the two nations, will build eight houses for poor people in Tien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam from January 4 to 11.

One hundred and sixty-nine volunteers from the two nations have arrived in the province’s Cho Gao District to prepare for the construction project, Habitat for Humanity Vietnam said in a press release sent to Tuoi Tre News on Tuesday, adding that it acts as the construction consultant while the bank is the sponsor.  

The two’s project is worth US$116,105, to be used to cover the cost of the construction of the eight houses and cover food, transport, and accommodation for people involved – including volunteers – as well as gifts and financial assistance for the beneficiaries.

“Housing provides a critical foundation for breaking the cycle of poverty,” said Kelly Koch, country director of Habitat for Humanity Vietnam.

“Habitat for Humanity alone cannot end poverty housing. It will take the efforts of business, governments, volunteers and other nonprofits.

“We thank Standard Chartered Bank Korea for sharing our journey toward improved lives and a brighter future for this beautiful community. It is a great demonstration of Habitat for Humanity’s mission of bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.”

Operating in Vietnam since 2001, the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity Vietnam has assisted 13,300 poor households in accessing clean water, improved hygiene and housing.
