On Saturday night, Phu Quoc experienced a widespread power outage after the 110kV Ha Tien-Phu Quoc undersea cable was damaged by a coastal walkway construction team whose piling work caused the failure.
The plan involves raising a section of the undersea cable to the location of failure so repair crews can remove the damaged segment and reconnect the line.
The work is expected to take about 10 days.
The solution was presented during a meeting held on Monday between Ho Van Mung, chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, and representatives from provincial departments, An Giang Power Company, the To Chau Ward People’s Committee, and the Phu Quoc administration.
In parallel with the cable repair, the power supplier has deployed multiple generators to the special zone to provide temporary electricity.
The outage has affected nearly 30,000 customers across Phu Quoc.
Since the incident, the firm has rotated power to areas including Cua Can and Cua Duong in an effort to maintain essential services.
Phu Quoc is supplied by two power sources, the 110kV Ha Tien-Phu Quoc undersea cable and the 220kV Kien Binh-Phu Quoc transmission line, local media reported.
However, as these are not yet integrated into a looped network, the incident led to a widespread blackout.
Phu Quoc is set to host the APEC forum in 2027.
