Tornado damages 24 houses in southern Vietnam

A powerful tornado swept through An Minh District in Kien Giang Province, southern Vietnam, toppling trees and destroying or unroofing 24 houses on Sunday.

The Military Command in An Minh District reported on Monday that dark clouds gathered before the violent tornado tore through Xeo Nhau A Hamlet in An Minh District.

After the tornado passed, local authorities and more than 40 officers and soldiers were quickly deployed to assist residents with cleaning up debris, securing belongings, and conducting an initial assessment of the damage.

Local authorities also visited affected families to offer encouragement following the natural disaster.

Later that evening, a short video of the tornado taken by a local resident circulated on social media. 

According to the video, the towering white tornado, reaching nearly one hundred meters, touched down, accompanied by heavy rainfall and powerful winds.

Earlier, another tornado was seen near the coastal area of An Thoi Ward in Phu Quoc City, also in Kien Giang Province. The incident caused no damage to homes.

According to Le Xuan Hien, director of the Kien Giang Meteorological and Hydrological Station, thunderstorms, whirlwinds, and lightning are common during the transitional period between seasons and the early rainy season.

He advised residents to reinforce their homes, prune trees near houses, parks, and roads, and strengthen billboards and signage to minimize the risk of property damage.
