Transport projects bring Can Gio closer to downtown Ho Chi Minh City

A series of large-scale, technically complex transport projects are being rolled out simultaneously in Can Gio, Ho Chi Minh City, gradually reshaping the area’s connectivity with the heart of the city and the southern key economic region.

Long constrained by ferry crossings and single-access roads, Can Gio is undergoing a transformation into an increasingly important node within the interregional transport network, driven by multiple major infrastructure developments.

The most notable is the Ben Thanh-Can Gio urban railway line, which got off the ground on December 19, 2025 and is scheduled to be completed and put into commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2028.

Once operational, the line is expected to shorten travel time from downtown Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio to about 20 minutes.

Rung Sac Road is currently the only vital transport artery linking Can Gio with Ho Chi Minh City’s inner urban area, bearing the entire volume of traffic traveling to and from the Can Gio coastline.

The Can Gio Bridge project is also being fast-tracked and is slated for completion in 2029.

The bridge will completely replace Binh Khanh Ferry and reduce road travel time from the city center to Can Gio’s coastline to around 40-50 minutes, compared with the current two or three hours.

On the interregional front, Ho Chi Minh City is preparing to break ground on the Rung Sac interchange project connecting with Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway, with completion targeted for 2028.

This project will enable residents of the southwestern and southeastern regions to reach Can Gio more conveniently via expressways and ring roads, minimizing the need to pass through inner-city areas.

Heavy traffic congestion stretches along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street toward Binh Khanh Ferry in Can Gio during peak hours.

In response to urgent connectivity needs following the merger with Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Binh Duong Provinces under the national administrative restructuring effective on July 1 last year, the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee agreed in principle to accelerate the implementation of the Can Gio-Vung Tau sea-crossing bridge and road project at the third conference of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Executive Committee in early January.

Currently, residents and officials traveling from downtown Ho Chi Minh City to the former Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province must still detour via Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway in Dong Nai Province.

These strategic infrastructure projects are steadily elevating Can Gio from an area dependent on ferry crossings into a new infrastructure hub and emerging growth pole of Ho Chi Minh City, one that is expected to welcome tens of millions of tourists each year.

Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway runs through the Rung Sac area of Can Gio in Ho Chi Minh City, where a major connecting interchange is planned. Nearby, the future Ben Thanh-Can Gio urban railway line will pass through the area, creating an interregional transport corridor and driving coastal urban development.
