As of 7:00 am on Thursday, the depression’s center was over the northeastern East Vietnam Sea with maximum sustained winds of 39–61 kph, gusting up to 75 kph, moving southwest.
Over the next 24 hours, it is expected to shift west-northwest at 15–20 kph and strengthen, reaching Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago by Friday morning.
The system is projected to maintain its strength as it moves west-northwest at around 20 kph.
By the morning of August 30, it could be off the coast from Nghe An to Da Nang before making landfall in central Vietnam and weakening.
Mai Van Khiem, director of the forecasting center, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the depression will directly affect the provinces from Thanh Hoa to Hue on August 30–31.
From August 30 to September 1, northern Vietnam and the Thanh Hoa–Hue region are expected to see moderate to heavy rainfall.
On Thursday evening, scattered showers and thunderstorms are also forecast from Thanh Hoa to Lam Dong and across the southern region, with localized downpours of 10–30mm and more than 80mm in some places.
Authorities have warned of possible flash floods in small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes, and flooding in low-lying areas if rainfall exceeds 80mm within three hours.
The depression is expected to cause hazardous sea conditions, with winds of 39–61 kph, gusts up to 75 kph, and waves two to four meters high in the northern East Vietnam Sea.
Vessels in these areas may encounter thunderstorms, squalls, strong winds, and rough seas.
