Bringing real-world experience to students

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Le Xuan Trung, deputy editor-in-chief of Tuoi Tre, said the partnership’s primary goal was to deliver practical benefits to students and better equip them to meet labor market demands.

Trung said Tuoi Tre was more than a news organization, with a broader ecosystem spanning media, event management and education.

The online newspaper has organized initiatives such as Pho Day, which celebrates Vietnamese pho, and Digital Finance Day, held in collaboration with the State Bank of Vietnam and the banking sector. Pho Day has grown from an event promoting Vietnamese culinary culture into an internationally recognized event.

Participating in such initiatives allows students to develop not only media skills but also a deeper understanding of how to plan, organize, and promote events to the public.

Students can gain hands-on experience as early as their first year, rather than waiting until graduation to enter a professional working environment.

“I hope the partnership between Tuoi Tre and British University Vietnam will leverage the strengths of both sides to develop concrete programs that give students more opportunities for practical experience, helping narrow the gap between classroom knowledge and employers’ real-world expectations,” Trung said.

Getting a head start on the job market

Speaking at the ceremony, Paul Julian Bennett, Chief Marketing and Student Recruitment Officer at BUV, said employers today seek graduates who not only possess knowledge and digital skills but can also demonstrate what they have done, not just what they have learned.

To achieve this, media organizations and businesses can help shape what students learn, how they apply their knowledge and how their abilities are assessed. This can include real-world projects commissioned by businesses, mentoring programs, industry professionals taking part in teaching, and internships.

Bennett pointed out that traditional university-business partnerships often occur at the recruitment stage, whereas collaboration should start much earlier during students' skill development phase.

He added that the ultimate objective of the partnership is to enable students to move confidently into the workforce and contribute effectively right after graduation.

Taking collaboration further

Under the agreement, the two sides will work together on media and admissions outreach, while increasing coverage of their joint initiatives, achievements and key events to highlight their contributions to society.

They will also collaborate on content development and organize academic exchanges, forums, seminars, panel discussions and media events on social issues. Lecturers, scientists, experts, and Tuoi Tre reporters and editors will have opportunities to participate in programs organized by the two sides as speakers, experts or guests.

In addition, Tuoi Tre online newspaper will work with BUV to design and deliver practical media training modules for students, including programs such as 'Doing Journalism With Tuoi Tre' and 'A Day in Media with Tuoi Tre.' Students will be able to learn and gain hands-on experience at the newspaper’s headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City or its regional representative offices.
