Tuoi Tre welcomes Ho Chi Minh City University of Education students for journalism workshop, newsroom tour

More than 100 English-major students and faculty members from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Education took part in a practical journalism workshop on Saturday morning at the headquarters of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, a major daily newspaper based in Ho Chi Minh City.

The visit was part of an ongoing initiative by Tuoi Tre to foster journalism and communication skills among university students across the country.

Bui Tien Dung, director of Tuoi Tre’s Training Center and head of the Education Desk, welcomed the delegation and introduced the newspaper’s long-standing history in Vietnamese media.

He lauded hands-on learning in journalism, noting that Tuoi Tre has collaborated with 14 universities nationwide to provide training and internship opportunities for their students.

“We hope to host many more visits like this,” Dung said.

“These sessions offer students the chance to experience the newsroom environment first-hand and understand what it takes to become a professional journalist.”

Representing the university, Dinh Tran Hanh Nguyen, vice dean of the English Department, expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

She appreciated the value such experiences bring to the students, particularly in applying their translation and interpretation skills in a real-world journalism setting.

“Our students have gained so much from their internships at Tuoi Tre over the years,” she said.

“We look forward to continuing this partnership and expanding opportunities for future cohorts.”

During the session, the students watched a short documentary outlining the history and milestones of Tuoi Tre.

They then attended an interactive panel with representatives from the International News – Tuoi Tre News Desk, which respectively produces international coverage in Vietnamese as well as English-language news for the paper’s English platform.

The journalists shared insights into the challenges of bilingual reporting, the editorial standards of the newsroom, and the professional traits required of modern journalists.

The discussion sparked lively engagement, with the students eagerly asking questions about newsroom workflows, the specific qualities and requirements of a journalist, how to build reliable sources, and issues of writing accuracy.

Many expressed enthusiasm about the profession and aspirations to pursue a career in the news media industry.

The visit concluded with a guided tour of the Tuoi Tre editorial offices, including a behind-the-scenes look at live journalism classes taking place on-site.

The event provided the students with a practical look at how a professional newsroom operates, complementing their academic studies.

Organizers said they hope such visits would help the students better understand the skills and demands of a career in journalism.
