Typhoon aftermath: 3 dead, dams broken in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An

In Thanh Hoa Province, two students have drowned and three irrigation dams have broken while an official drowned in Nghe An, all a result of Typhoon Wutip’s violent hit to central Vietnam on Monday.

The dead victims are Nguyen Luong Nguyen and Mai Kien Quang, both only 12 years old. They lived in Cong Binh Commune, Nong Cong District, Tran Van Thuan, chairman of the district People’s Committee, said.
They were found dead after being swept away by floodwater in the district on Tuesday, October 1.

The district suffered a total loss of VND100 billion (US$4.8 million) caused by recent torrential rains and flooding, the chairman added.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Van Duong, deputy chairman of the Tinh Gia District, Thanh Hoa Province, reported that three irrigation dams had been broken in three communes, Truong Lam, Tan Truong, and Phu Lam.

The typhoon also damaged several water reservoirs in the district and broke a section of the flood resistant dyke in Truc Lam Commune, submerging hundreds of houses and many sections of National Highway 1A.

At 10 pm on Tuesday, floodwater brought on by the typhoon swept a 7-seat car of the Nghe An Province Department of Industry and Trade into a river. It was carrying food relief to residents in areas hit by the typhoon.

The accident occurred when the vehicle reached the Hoang Mai Bridge. The driver escaped from the car but Nguyen Tai Dung, deputy director of the department, was stuck inside and swept away by violent floodwater.
Rescuers have since found the car with Nguyen Tai Dung’s lifeless body inside.
