OMO on Saturday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Forestry and Forest Protection under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to implement the new five-year commitment.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Nguyen Tinh Tam, senior brand manager of OMO, said the program has been implemented since 2021 in line with government orientations and aims to strengthen ecosystems against climate change.

Aside from tree planting, the company is applying solutions for soil restoration and water resource protection, with a view to restoring ecological balance in project areas.

These efforts support Vietnam’s pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as announced by the prime minister at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, in Scotland.

Unilever Vietnam previously tested drone-based seed dispersal at Nui Chua-Phuoc Binh National Park in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam.

According to experts, this method allows reforestation in steep, rocky, and hard-to-reach areas, and expands technical options for forest recovery projects.

Le Pham Van Duan, deputy head of the Institute for Forest Ecology and Environment, said that scientific approaches to reforestation not only increase green coverage but also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, carbon storage, and potential participation in carbon credit mechanisms.

According to Trieu Van Luc, deputy director of the Department of Forestry and Forest Protection, Vietnam has planted about 1.45 billion trees in five years, exceeding the government’s target by 45 percent under the national ‘One billion trees’ program in the 2021-25 period.

Luc emphasized that partnerships between the state and businesses, such as Unilever’s, are crucial to expanding reforestation efforts and achieving Vietnam’s environmental and climate goals.
