The World Cup watch party brought together diplomats from the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, members of the American community living in the city, and Vietnamese supporters of the U.S. national team.

Belgium defeated the U.S. 4-1 to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper after the match, U.S. Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Melissa A. Brown said the World Cup and the U.S.' 250th Independence Day anniversary have been at the forefront of her mind this year.

“I was just in the U.S. for the Fourth of July,” Brown said.

“Celebrating the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding while also hosting the World Cup and welcoming international visitors, makes me incredibly proud.

“I am the number one fan of the U.S. national team and always hope they achieve positive results.”

Brown also thanked Vietnamese fans for supporting and cheering on the U.S. team.

Chris Le, Acting Deputy Consul General of the U.S. in Ho Chi Minh City, described the team's elimination as disappointing but said she remained proud of the players' determination.

“Soccer reflects part of a country's culture. The U.S. team demonstrated resilience, determination, and unity. That is something very special,” she said.

Le added that the U.S. co-hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada and Mexico offers an opportunity to showcase the three countries' passion for sports.

Le also noted similarities between Vietnamese and American fans.

“I have seen Vietnamese fans take to the streets with flags and jerseys to celebrate victories,” she added.

“In the U.S., we do the same. Both countries share a deep love for soccer and sports, which brings us closer together.”
