Vietnam Airlines adds Jakarta flights as Indonesia airport reopens after volcanic ash disruption
Vietnam Airlines has added flights and adjusted its schedule between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Jakarta, Indonesia, on Monday as operations at the city’s main airport are set to resume following disruptions caused by volcanic ash from Krakatau.

Indonesia’s aviation authorities said Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is expected to resume operations from 3:00 pm on September 7, though the reopening could change depending on conditions.
Vietnam Airlines plans to operate four flights from Jakarta to Vietnam on Monday afternoon.
Flights VN630D and VN630 from Jakarta to Ho Chi Minh City are scheduled to depart at 3:50 pm and 5:50 pm, respectively, while VN634B and VN634D to Hanoi are set to leave at 3:00 pm and 4:50 pm.
In the opposite direction, flights VN631D and VN631 from Ho Chi Minh City to Jakarta are scheduled to depart at 11:50 am and 1:50 pm.
From Hanoi, VN635D is scheduled to leave at 11:20 am, while VN635 is set to depart at 8:00 pm.
All times are local and subject to further changes depending on operations at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
The additional flights are aimed at maintaining connections with Jakarta and clearing a backlog of passengers affected since September 6, according to the carrier.
The Jakarta airport was temporarily closed on Sunday because of volcanic ash, forcing Vietnam Airlines flight VN634 from Jakarta to Hanoi to be canceled.
Vietjet, which also operates direct services linking Jakarta with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, suspended four flights – VJ855, VJ854, VJ929 and VJ928 – on September 6.
The carrier has yet to announce its flight plan for September 7 or arrangements for affected passengers.
Vietnam Airlines said it would continue monitoring the situation and adjust its schedule if necessary.
Passengers traveling to or from Jakarta are advised to check updated flight information through airlines’ official websites, apps and other channels before heading to the airport.
Anak Krakatau, in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, has been erupting since the evening of September 4, sending volcanic ash into areas around several Indonesian airports.
The eruption has disrupted operations at six airports, affecting hundreds of flights and more than 22,000 passengers.
At Soekarno-Hatta International Airport near Jakarta, 301 flights were affected, including 58 international services.
Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung was also shut after authorities found signs that volcanic ash had reached the area.
