A flight operated by national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines en route from Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai, China was diverted to Hong Kong for an emergency landing to provide medical assistance for a passenger who experienced health issues on Wednesday.

Flight VN524, with nearly 250 passengers on board, was traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai when a Vietnamese passenger, identified as T.A.T., began showing signs of deteriorating health.

The cabin crew immediately provided first aid and implemented standard onboard medical assistance procedures.

Despite these efforts, the passenger’s condition did not improve, prompting the flight crew to assess the situation and decide that urgent medical attention was necessary.

The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Hong Kong International Airport to ensure the passenger could receive medical care as quickly as possible.

After receiving notification from the captain, Vietnam Airlines’ representatives in Hong Kong coordinated with airport authorities and relevant agencies to prepare an ambulance, medical personnel, and the necessary ground support services ahead of the aircraft’s arrival.

The plane landed in Hong Kong at 10:59 am (local time) on the same day.

The ill passenger was immediately transported to a healthcare facility for further examination and treatment.

Following the completion of required procedures, the flight resumed its journey and departed Hong Kong for Shanghai at 12:10 pm (local time).

Vietnam Airlines later reported at 4:30 pm that the passenger was initially diagnosed with a blood pressure-related condition and had stabilized after receiving medical treatment.

The airline said the decision to divert the flight was based on an assessment of the passenger’s condition and was carried out in accordance with operational and aviation safety procedures.

It emphasized that ensuring passengers receive timely medical assistance remains the highest priority in health-related emergencies.

The incident is not the first time Vietnam Airlines has altered a flight’s route to respond to an onboard medical emergency.

The carrier had previously diverted or made unscheduled landings in Kolkata (India), Istanbul (Turkey), Da Nang, and Hue to provide urgent medical assistance for passengers experiencing health problems mid-flight.

The airline also advises travelers to monitor and evaluate their health before flying.

Passengers experiencing unusual symptoms are encouraged to seek medical advice and carefully consider their travel plans to ensure their safety and well-being during air travel.
