Vietnam remains one of Asia’s top three destinations for repeat travelers, according to a new Agoda ranking based on booking data from the first half of 2026.

Agoda said repeat visits are a useful measure of a destination’s lasting appeal, as travelers often return to discover places they missed, try new experiences, or simply revisit destinations they already love.

Tokyo topped this year’s ranking of Asian cities, overtaking Bangkok, while Bali came in third for the first time. Seoul and Osaka followed.

Vietnam’s Da Nang ranked sixth in Asia, ahead of Kuala Lumpur, Fukuoka, Taipei, and Johor Bahru.

Within Vietnam, Da Nang had the highest share of repeat visitors, followed by Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Hanoi, and Phu Quoc.

The central coastal city climbed two places from last year, helped by its long beaches, relaxed atmosphere, and easy access to Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City also improved their positions, while Sa Pa moved up three places from last year.

Rising international arrivals are also driving more spending at destinations, particularly on services closely tied to travelers’ needs, such as dining, convenience shopping, and entertainment. One sign of that trend can be seen in cashless payments.

Payment platform Payoo said QR-code and card transactions made by international visitors from August 29 to September 6 rose 50 percent year-on-year, with most spending recorded at food and beverage outlets and convenience stores.

Vietnam welcomed 13.9 million international arrivals in the first seven months of 2026, up 13.8 percent year on year, with China and South Korea among the key source markets.

The figures come as Vietnam seeks not only to attract more visitors, but also to encourage longer stays, repeat visits, and higher spending.

Under Resolution 26, issued on August 22, 2026, Vietnam aims to welcome 45-50 million international visitors and serve 160 million domestic tourists by 2030.

The country is also targeting US$80-90 billion in tourism revenue, with a focus on high-spending, long-stay travelers.
