Vietnam won four gold medals after two days of competition at the sixth World Kun Khmer Championship, which kicked off in Cambodia on Tuesday.

Following the early rounds, Vietnam advanced to five finals and emerged with an impressive haul of four gold medals and one silver.

Vietnam’s first final began on a disappointing note. Fighter Nguyen Ngoc Quyen suffered a defeat in just two rounds against Cameroon’s Kenmegne in the men’s 73kg amateur final.

The setback proved short-lived as Vietnamese fighters quickly rebounded in the remaining title bouts.

Martial artists Phung Thi Hong Tham, Nguyen Thi Mai, Ta Kim Yen and Phung Phu Thuan delivered commanding performances to secure gold medals for the national team.

With four golds and one silver, Vietnam temporarily topped the medal standings.

The Kun Khmer tournament drew the participation of more than 120 athletes from 20 countries and territories worldwide. It runs till Friday.

Kun Khmer, Cambodia’s traditional martial art, shares similarities with Muay Thai and kickboxing, but operates under its own distinct rule system.

The sport is characterized by its diverse striking techniques, particularly the extensive use of elbow and knee strikes.
