Vietnam expected to seal victory over Malaysia in ASEAN Cup semifinal second leg

Back at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam are well placed to secure a convincing victory over Malaysia in the second leg of their 2026 ASEAN Championship semifinal at 8:00 pm on Wednesday.

The hosts go into the match with a commanding 2-0 advantage after winning the first leg away from home.

The result has given head coach Kim Sang Sik's side a major confidence boost, not only because of the two-goal cushion but also because of Vietnam's dominant head-to-head record against Malaysia over the past decade.

It has been 12 years since Vietnam last suffered a defeat to their Southeast Asian rivals.

That setback came in the second leg of the 2014 AFF Cup semifinal, when Malaysia stunned Vietnam with a 4-2 victory at My Dinh Stadium to reach the final.

It was a nightmare night that remains etched in the memories of many Vietnamese fans.

However, since then, Malaysia have failed to beat Vietnam.

The only apparent exception came in the 2027 Asian Championship qualifiers, when Malaysia won 4-0.

Yet after fielding a number of ineligible naturalized players, Malaysia were subsequently handed a 0-3 forfeit.

Therefore, Vietnam retain their unbeaten record against Malaysia over the past 12 years.

That record provides the hosts with a significant psychological advantage.

More importantly, Vietnam hold a two-goal lead after their away victory, leaving Malaysia with virtually no alternative but to attack.

That could prove to be a double-edged sword for the visitors.

As Malaysia push forward, gaps are likely to open behind their defense, giving Vietnam opportunities to launch quick counterattacks.

Playing at home will further strengthen Vietnam's position.

The hosts do not need to raise the tempo or take unnecessary risks.

Instead, they can control the game, remain patient and wait for Malaysia to make mistakes before quickly switching from defense to attack.

In terms of personnel, coach Kim also has the upper hand, with several options available across the squad.

Malaysia, by contrast, are dealing with significant absences, limiting their ability to rotate and adjust their line-up in a match they must win.

Statistical projections also strongly favor the hosts.

According to a supercomputer analysis, Vietnam have a 66-percent chance of winning, compared with just 17 percent for Malaysia.

Vietnam's players have consistently shown discipline, focus and a serious approach to their matches.

As a result, the chances of Malaysia repeating their 2014 upset appear slim.

Vietnam could even settle the tie as early as the first half.

Vietnam are predicted to claim a 3-0 victory over Malaysia, with a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Thailand secured a place in the final of the ASEAN Championship on Tuesday despite losing 2-1 to Singapore in Bangkok as the seven-time champions completed a narrow 4-3 aggregate victory.

The 2026 ASEAN Championship, Southeast Asia's premier men's international football tournament, runs from July 24 to August 26, featuring 10 teams divided into two groups.

Vietnam competed in Group A alongside Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste, while Group B consisted of Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos.

My Dinh Stadium hosts Vietnam's home matches during the tournament.

As reigning champions, coach Kim's side entered the tournament with the goal of reaching the final and successfully defending their regional title.
