Vietnam exports ready-to-eat poultry eggs to Japan

Vietnam has officially exported its first shipment of ready-to-eat poultry eggs to Japan after an extended period of product testing and quality assessments, marking a significant milestone that could open up major export opportunities for the country’s egg industry.

Vinh Thanh Dat Food JSC, operating the VFood brand, on Thursday shipped its first container of 172,000 ready-to-eat eggs to the Japanese market.

The shipment was the result of cooperation between Vinh Thanh Dat and its Japanese partner.

The two sides spent nearly two years preparing, researching, and refining the product, which was developed with support from Japanese experts to meet local consumer preferences as well as Japan’s stringent food safety standards.

The successful export of the first shipment not only reflects the company’s efforts to enhance the value of Vietnamese egg products but also creates new opportunities for processed egg products from Vietnam to enter demanding international markets.

Truong Chi Thien, general director of Vinh Thanh Dat, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that Japan is a large market known for its strict requirements.

As a result, the company repeatedly sent product samples to Japan for quality evaluation.

The product has been approved for export to Japan for an initial 12-month period.

After that period, the Japanese partner will review the product’s performance and may approve a longer-term export arrangement.

“Our current production capacity is still modest compared to our partner’s demand. We are therefore planning to expand our factory to increase supply in the coming period, as the market potential in Japan remains very large and egg prices there are relatively high,” Thien said.

According to industry representatives, many farms expanded their poultry flocks after egg prices rose sharply, particularly for industrial chicken eggs.

This development resulted in oversupply in the domestic market, causing prices to decline significantly for an extended period.

A representative of the Dong Nai Livestock Association told Tuoi Tre on Thursday that periods of oversupply and steep price declines occur frequently, leaving farmers facing financial losses.

“The opening of export markets helps absorb output and contributes to the sustainable development of the industry.

It also creates opportunities for farmers to improve production capacity, upgrade farming processes, and enhance the value of Vietnam’s poultry egg sector,” the representative said.

Egg prices recover

According to egg farmers in southern Vietnam, industrial chicken eggs are currently being sold at farms for around VND1,500-1,700 (US$0.05-0.06) per egg, depending on quality, up VND300-400 from the lows recorded in early June.

Over the past few months, egg prices had remained depressed at VND1,100-1,400 per egg, causing substantial losses for many producers.

Farm operators said feed prices have increased by more than VND1,000 ($0.03) per kilogram, pushing production costs to around VND1,600-1,700 per egg in recent months and placing considerable pressure on farmers.
