Vietnam have been placed in Group E of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup with South Korea, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and one final team yet to be determined, following an official draw held in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night.

South Korea enter the tournament as one of Asia’s strongest sides, currently ranked 25th in the world and third in Asia.

Their squad features several internationally renowned stars, including Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in, and Kim Min-jae.

The UAE, ranked 68th in the FIFA world rankings, are also expected to pose a significant challenge.

After years without major success on the continental stage, UAE football authorities have accelerated their naturalization program.

As a result, the national team now include a number of talented players with backgrounds in Europe, South America, and Africa.

The final spot in Group E will go to either Yemen or Lebanon.

The two teams will face each other in the final round of the last qualifying stage on June 4 to decide the final ticket to the tournament finals.

The match was originally scheduled for March 31, but was postponed due to the Middle East conflict.

Tensions in the Middle East escalated after coordinated airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iran in late February triggered retaliatory attacks and heightened instability across the region.

While the draw did not produce an obvious ‘group of death,’ Group F is already attracting major attention due to several high-profile rivalries.

The group includes Japan, defending champions Qatar, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Japan remain one of Asia’s elite teams and have consistently produced impressive performances against top international opponents in recent years.

Meanwhile, Qatar are two-time Asian Cup champions, defeating Japan in the 2019 final.

Thailand and Indonesia add another layer of intrigue to Group F as the Southeast Asian rivals share a long-standing competitive history.

Although their chances of progressing may be limited against Japan and Qatar, their head-to-head clash is likely to carry significant emotional and regional importance.

The 2027 AFC Asian Cup will feature 24 teams and is scheduled to take place in January next year.
