A local man brought over VND60 million (US$2,280) worth of small-denomination notes to a Toyota showroom in Vietnam to buy a car, but a viral claim that he saved VND20,000 ($0.8) per day for years to purchase a VND700-million ($26,650) vehicle is inaccurate, the dealership confirmed.

Social media users on Thursday morning shared images of the man carrying 10 boxes of Vietnamese notes in denominations of VND1,000-VND5,000 ($0.03-$0.2) to Toyota Bac Giang, located in northern Bac Ninh Province.

Many posts claimed he had saved VND20,000 daily from breakfast money until he could afford a Toyota worth nearly VND700 million.

Some netizens praised his thriftiness, calling it a lesson in valuing money and perseverance.

Others doubted the story’s math, pointing out it would take decades to save that much at that rate.

The dealership clarified that the man brought only about VND60 million in small change, which he had collected over years from various sources.

He used the sum as part of the payment for a Toyota Yaris Cross, transferring the remaining amount via bank transfer.

Counting the cash required around 20 staff members and took nearly two hours.

The car was handed over to the customer on Thursday afternoon.
