Vietnam ministry backs 7-day Lunar New Year break in 2027

In a written response to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the ministry supported the first of two proposed Tet holiday options, which would give civil servants and public employees seven consecutive days off without requiring a working-day swap.

Under the proposal, the Tet holiday would run from February 4 to February 10, 2027, equivalent to the 28th day of the last lunar month through the fifth day of the first lunar month.

The break would include the five statutory Tet holiday days and two compensatory days off for weekend days that overlap with the holiday period.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had earlier proposed a second option that would extend the Tet break to 10 consecutive days, from February 5 to February 14, through a working-day swap.

However, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism opted for the seven-day plan.

The ministry also supported the first option for Vietnam Culture Day in 2026, under which workers would receive four consecutive days off from November 21 to November 24.

The arrangement would require making up a working day on November 28.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked 13 ministries and agencies to submit feedback on the proposed holiday schedules by August 10 before a final plan is submitted to the prime minister for consideration.

For National Day in 2027, the ministry has proposed a four-day holiday from September 2 to September 5, combining the official holiday with an adjacent day off and the weekend.
