Vietnam opposes use of force against sovereign states amid US-Israel-Iran fighting

Vietnam has aired its opposition to the use of force against sovereign states, warning that escalating hostilities in the Middle East have caused heavy damage, endangered civilians including Vietnamese nationals, and disrupted global economic stability, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.

The foreign ministry's spokesperson Pham Thu Hang made the remarks in response to reporters’ questions about Vietnam’s stance on the rapidly intensifying tensions, noting that Hanoi had already outlined its position last Saturday.

“Vietnam opposes the use of force against sovereign countries, especially attacks targeting civilian infrastructure that cause casualties,” Hang said.

She stressed that the ongoing military actions have resulted in significant losses and continue to threaten the lives, safety, and legitimate interests of civilians, including Vietnamese citizens in the region, while undermining regional and global peace, stability, and economic activity.

Vietnam urged all parties to exercise restraint, act responsibly, and strictly adhere to international law, as well as the Charter and relevant resolutions of the United Nations.

The spokesperson also called on the parties to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, resume negotiations, and promote dialogue to resolve differences through peaceful means for the benefit of their people and for broader regional and global stability and development.

This is the second statement issued by the Vietnamese foreign ministry since the latest escalation began on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel carried out airstrikes on multiple targets in Tehran, killing Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior officials.

Iran subsequently launched retaliatory attacks on Israel and targeted U.S. bases across the Middle East with ballistic missiles and drones, including facilities in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.

There have so far been no public signs that the two sides are preparing for talks to end the military escalation.
