Vietnam orders urgent recall of US baby formula following infant botulism cases

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last Saturday announced a voluntary recall of all batches of the formula produced by Nara Organics.

The product was distributed through Target retail stores in the U.S., Target.com, and Nara.com between July 2025 and June 2026.

FDA added that the formula was not officially distributed outside the U.S..

The recall followed reports of three infant botulism cases in the U.S. states of California, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

Initial investigations found that all three had consumed the formula before showing symptoms.

In response, the Vietnam Food Safety Authority under the Ministry of Health requested health departments and food safety agencies nationwide to immediately review whether the product had been registered, self-declared or distributed in Vietnam.

Authorities were required to work with any companies involved in importing or distributing the product, notify distributors and consumers to stop using it, and carry out recalls in line with the manufacturer's recommendations.

Businesses must also report the quantity imported, sold and remaining in inventory so that appropriate measures can be taken.

The Vietnam Food Safety Authority urged consumers not to use any recalled batches of Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula and called for stronger public awareness efforts regarding the safety warning.

The agency also asked e-commerce regulators to notify online marketplaces and sellers to halt sales of the recalled formula, remove product listings, and enforce penalties for violations.
