The planned Gia Binh airport site lies about 45 km east of Hanoi’s center and 65 km southeast of Noi Bai International Airport.

The airport project will cover nearly 1,900 hectares, including more than 900 hectares of rice farmland that will be acquired for construction.

Investors will be required to fund at least 15 percent of the project’s capital.

The airport is designated as an ICAO 4F facility and is planned to serve both civilian and defense needs.

It is expected to support Vietnam’s hosting of the APEC summit in 2027, which will be held on Phu Quoc Island, located in southern Kien Giang Province.

Under the plan, the first phase running to 2030 aims to deliver capacity for 30 million passengers a year, with later expansion to 50 million by 2050.

Lawmakers also approved a separate public-investment project to build the 60-km Vinh–Thanh Thuy expressway in north-central Nghe An Province at a cost of nearly VND24 trillion ($910.9 million).

The government said the road will bolster east–west transport links and connect with major national corridors.
