Vietnam police launch criminal probe into deadly pig farm accident

The provincial administration announced the formal probe on Friday, citing preliminary findings that revealed potential violations of occupational safety and hygiene regulations. 

Investigators have initiated criminal proceedings under Article 295 of Vietnam’s Penal Code, which addresses severe safety violations in the workplace and public areas.

The tragedy unfolded on the afternoon of July 18 at a high-tech pig breeding facility operated by Dabaco Thanh Hoa in Thach Quang Commune.

According to authorities, the incident began when a worker lost consciousness and fell into an enclosed biogas pit, overwhelmed by toxic gas emissions. 

In a desperate bid to save him, 12 co-workers rushed to the pit.

Some climbed down inside while others leaned over the opening to pull victims out—all reportedly operating without personal protective equipment.

The toxic fumes rapidly overcome multiple rescuers in succession, turning the frantic rescue effort into a mass-casualty event.

Five workers died at the scene. Eight others were rushed to Bach Mai Hospital’s facility in nearby Ninh Binh Province for emergency treatment; all eight have since been discharged.

Provincial police are currently collaborating with agriculture, environmental, and construction authorities to determine official liability among the individuals and management involved.
