Vietnam provides $300,000 in aid to Nepal after deadly floods, landslides

The Party, state and people of Vietnam have decided to provide the emergency humanitarian aid to help the Government and people of Nepal overcome the consequences of devastating flash floods and landslides, based on the traditional friendship, solidarity and mutual support between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

Previously, on August 27, one day after the flash floods and landslides occurred, Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam sent condolences to Nepalese President Ram Chandra Paudel.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung sent a message of condolences to his Nepalese counterpart Balendra Shah, while National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man sent a message to Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives Dol Prasad Aryal.

On the same day, Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung extended condolences to his Nepalese counterpart Shishir Khanal.

On the afternoon of September 3, Nepal’s Council of Ministers met in the capital Kathmandu and decided to hold a national day of mourning on September 7 to commemorate those who lost their lives in the disaster.

Government spokesperson and Minister of Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel said that during the national mourning, Nepal’s national flag would be flown at half-mast at all government offices across the country, as well as at Nepalese embassies and diplomatic missions abroad.

According to Pokharel, the national day of mourning will be observed on the 13th day after the disaster, in accordance with the Hindu tradition of conducting a 13-day mourning ritual for the deceased.

According to Nepal’s disaster management authorities, as of Friday morning, at least 1,259 people had been killed and more than 5,000 remained missing in Nepal.

Also on Friday, Nepalese rescuers rescued two workers alive from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project in Rasuwa District, nine days after the disaster struck.

At least 900 people are believed to remain trapped in tunnels belonging to six hydropower projects along the Trishuli River, Reuters reported, citing officials and rescuers in Nepal.
