Vietnam tech giant FPT partners with top AI research institute to advance research, technology transfer

FPT announced the partnership on Friday.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung said AI is a strategic technology that Vietnam needs to prioritize, develop and gradually master, with practical products serving as a key measure of success.

He called for a shift from research toward core technologies, inventions and commercial solutions, with highly skilled talent at the heart of the process and greater opportunities for scientists and young talent to participate in major projects.

He also stressed the need to develop AI safely and responsibly, ensuring transparency and data security, while expanding cooperation of the government, research institutes and businesses with a focus on addressing major challenges in manufacturing, healthcare, education and digital infrastructure.

Under the agreement, FPT and Mila will expand research into advanced AI fields, including foundation models, agentic AI, physical AI, and AI applications for safety and cybersecurity.

The two sides will also strengthen researcher exchanges, training and knowledge transfer.

They aim to develop technologies with both scientific value and strong practical applications, apply research results to challenges facing the public sector and businesses, and expand cooperation with universities, research institutes and the broader innovation ecosystem.

Nguyen Van Khoa, FPT's CEO, said the firm’s research would remain closely connected to practical needs and focus on developing concrete results and products to address national challenges.

The partnership will also contribute to developing highly skilled talent and creating opportunities for young scientists to advance their careers, he said.

Mila is one of the world's leading AI research institutes, with strengths in machine learning, deep learning, generative AI and responsible AI.

Through its extensive network of collaborations among academia, businesses and international research organizations, Mila plays an important role in developing talent and transferring scientific advances into practical applications.

FPT and Mila established their partnership in 2020, when FPT became Mila's first strategic partner in Southeast Asia for AI research and initiatives promoting responsible AI.

The partnership has produced 162 scientific publications, including 126 papers at leading international conferences and journals.

Other notable results include the training of 80 young researchers and five patents being accepted.
