The Ha Giang Loop, one of the best road trips in Asia, is located in former Ha Giang Province, now part of Tuyen Quang Province.

This 350-kilometer route through Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark is famed for its dramatic scenery and challenging roads.

With sharp bends, cliffs, and deep valleys, it attracts thousands of adventure travelers each year but poses significant risks.

The Tuyen Quang Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism recently announced stricter oversight of travel agencies and rental services along National Highway 4C, which runs from former Ha Giang City to Dong Van and Meo Vac.

The move comes after international travel forums raised concerns about unsafe practices on the popular route.

Nguyen Thi Hoai, deputy head of the department, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the department is not avoiding responsibility but proactively managing risks to ensure visitor safety and improve the travel experience.

Officials are working with local authorities and businesses to enforce compliance, requiring licensed operators to provide properly maintained vehicles, helmets, and protective gear.

Unlicensed companies are banned from advertising or selling tours.

Transport service providers must not combine groups of tourists without authorization, alter itineraries, or switch drivers without approval.

Any accidents or safety incidents must be reported immediately to tour operators and authorities.

Service providers must only serve tourists under legal contracts or agreements that clearly specify drivers, vehicles, travel routes, rest stops, and responsibilities for handling emergencies.

Hoai added that maintaining safety standards is crucial in protecting the province’s reputation as a responsible and welcoming destination.

The crackdown follows reports of multiple accidents.

In early April, a 19-year-old British tourist identified as O.W. died while using an ‘easy rider’ service, where local drivers take visitors on motorbike tours, local media reported.

On April 8, surveillance footage showed two foreign tourists losing control on a steep curve near Bac Sum Pass, narrowly avoiding collision with a truck. Both riders were able to stand up afterward, according to Dan Tri newspaper.

The incident drew significant public attention and sparked intense discussions among international travelers, with many highlighting safety risks associated with motorbike travel along the mountainous route.

According to the tourism official, around 500,000 international tourists visit Tuyen Quang annually.

Last year, the mountainous province welcomed more than 525,000 international visitors from over 200 countries and territories.

The local tourism sector employs 27,000 workers, with nearly 9,000 trained in hospitality and over 330 licensed guides.
