Vietnam to close Ca Mau airport for 1 year for expansion

Vietnam will shut down Ca Mau airport in the country’s southernmost namesake province for one year from October 30 to expand its runway and upgrade facilities, the construction ministry said.

The closure, approved at the request of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, will run through October 31, 2026.

The upgrade, worth VND2.4 trillion (US$90.8 million), will be carried out by state-owned Airports Corporation of Vietnam and funded entirely by its own capital, the ministry said in a statement.

Plans include a new 2,400-meter runway to replace the current 1,500-meter runway used mainly by turboprop aircraft, expanded taxiways and parking stands, and an upgraded passenger terminal with capacity for 500,000 travelers a year.

The project will enable the airport to handle Airbus A320 and A321 jets.

Ca Mau airport currently serves smaller aircraft such as the ATR 72 and handles about 200,000 passengers annually.
