The foreign ministry's spokesperson Pham Thu Hang made the remarks in Hanoi on Sunday in response to reporters’ questions about Vietnam’s reaction to the signing of the peace deal by its two neighboring countries earlier the same day in Kuala Lumpur.
As a neighbor of both Cambodia and Thailand and a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Vietnam is deeply interested in and welcomes the signing of the peace accord, Hang said.
“This is an important and positive step that demonstrates the two countries’ commitment to peace, cooperation, and development, in line with the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia,” Hang stressed.
She also expressed Vietnam’s appreciation for the efforts of all parties involved, including Malaysia — the 2025 ASEAN Chair — and its Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the U.S. and its President Donald Trump, as well as other stakeholders, in the process of seeking a peaceful solution to the Cambodia–Thailand border issue.
“Vietnam believes the peace document will serve as a foundation for strengthening mutual trust and moving toward a long-term peaceful solution,” Hang stated.
“The country will continue to actively participate in ASEAN’s joint efforts to support Cambodia and Thailand in fully and effectively implementing the agreement.”
The peace deal was signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Manet.
Malaysian PM Ibrahim, in his capacity as ASEAN Chair, and U.S. President Donald Trump also co-signed the landmark agreement, which marked an official step toward ending the conflict and restoring peace along the two countries’ shared border.
Titled the ‘Kuala Lumpur Accord,’ the document stipulates that Thailand and Cambodia will immediately cease hostilities, withdraw heavy weapons from conflict zones, and launch joint demining operations.
According to a press release from the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand will also release 18 Cambodian prisoners on humanitarian grounds under the terms of the peace deal.
