Vietnamese authorities ask workers fleeing Taiwanese-owned company over COVID-19 back for testing

Authorities of a district in the southern Vietnamese province of Binh Duong have called on the worried workers of a Taiwanese company to return for COVID-19 testing after they rushed out of it over a coronavirus case.

The province’s Bau Bang District administration on Sunday morning said it had made the calling to those workers who pulled down the gate of Ampacs International Co. Ltd. to ‘escape’ on Saturday after hearing the news of a COVID-19 infection among their colleagues.

They have been asked to return to the Taiwanese-owned company, which manufactures earphones at Bau Bang Industrial Park, for coronavirus testing and identification of direct contacts of the infection, a representative of the administration said.    

After taking around 600 samples out of the 5,900 workers of the firm for coronavirus testing on Saturday evening, local health workers have continued sampling the rest of the workforce.

In response to the authorities’ request, many of the nervous workers have come back to their workplace on Sunday morning for sampling.

Earlier, many video clips posted on social media showed a lot of workers of the company rushing out through the firm’s gate despite the prevention of security guards.

They were requested to stay on in the company after work for COVID-19 sampling, but they, in panic, did not follow the requirement.

The Ministry of Health at noon on Sunday confirmed 633 new COVID-19 infections, of which 600 were detected in Ho Chi Minh City.

The latest cases have taken the country’s tally to 29,103, including 9,204 recoveries and 112 deaths, since early 2020.

Since the pandemic’s fourth wave erupted in Vietnam on April 27, the Southeast Asian country has documented 25,615 domestic infections.
